SMB loses key players

MANILA—San Miguel Beer will be playing without Danny Ildefonso and Marc Pingris in Game 3 of the PBA finals after the two got one-game suspensions for charging at a fan late in Game 2.

SMB won Game 2 to even the series at 1-1, and without the two it will be like a walk in the park for the Ginebra Kings as they gun for a 2-1 lead today at the Araneta Coliseum.

Both the 6’5” Ildefonso and the 6’3” Pingris, who combined for 20 points in their 95-78 win in the second game, got suspended by PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios for involving themselves in an altercation with a Ginebra fan after the match last Friday at the Araneta Coliseum.

San Miguel Corp., which owns the franchises of both the Kings and the Beermen, expressed sadness over the incident, and said it will not condone such behavior of any of its players against any fans, who are the lifeblood of the company.

“Rest assured that, the mother company San Miguel Corp., does not and will not tolerate such kind of action by any of our players,” the SMC statement said.

Apart from the suspension, Ildefonso, who was the first to charge at the spectator, was fined P30,000 while Pingris, who came to Ildefonso’s aid, is P10,000 poorer.

The two teams meet again for Game 3 at 6 p.m.

The two players apologized to the PBA, to the viewers and the fans during a meeting with Commissioner Barrios early Saturday.

The victory by the Beermen was a fitting vengeance for their 102-96 setback to the Kings in Game 1 last Wednesday.

San Miguel Beer coach Siot Tanquingcen expressed sadness over the loss of Ildefonso and Pingris, who scored 10 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter that helped them survived a late surge by the Kings.

Another key factor for the equalizer was the Beermen’s dominance of the boards and shooting.

SMB out-rebounded the Kings, 57-40, and converted 39.7 percent of their shots to Ginebra’s 34.6.
