THE Summit Triathlon Team Championship Series in Bohol on Oct. 29 has already attracted 43 participants.
Sugbutriatlon official Benjoe Gimenez said the participants, which will include Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition contestant Allan Chuachoy, are from Cagayan de Oro City, Dumaguete, Tagbiliran and Cebu.
“Summit decided to host a team triathlon event because of the growing community of triathlon in the country,” Gimenez said.
Gimenez credited the growth to the country’s hosting of international triathlon races such as the Xterra Triathlon and the prestigious Cobra 70.3 Ironman Philippines in Camsur where Cebu’s Noy Jopson won.
Jopson’s victory got him a spot in the Ford Ironman Championship in Kona, Hawaii and he made an impressive finish of 10 hours and 32 minutes. He was first among the 13 Filipino participants.
“This is something we Cebuanos should be proud of. We have world-class triathletes who can be very competitive like Jopson,” Gimenez said.
Gimenez added that they want to gather the country’s top triathletes to compete in this three-leg series so that they can attract more athletes to get into the sport.
The second leg of the team championship is on Nov. 27 at Negros Oriental and the final leg will be on Jan, 29, 2012 in Borbon, Cebu.
The race will feature a standard Olympic distance--1.5 kilometer swim, 40-km bike and a 10-km run. Each team must have four members, which can be an all-female, all-male or a mixed team.
Gimenez also added that they will be limiting the participants to 100 ensure their safety.
Registration for the event is P2,000 and participants will have until Oct. 15 to sign up.
