Cebu wipes out Bohol

IAN Bernido and Karl Jeanette Malazarte capped Team Cebu City’s performance in the regional finals of the Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) as they won the long-distance events yesterday in Tagbilaran City.

Because of this, the athletics team representing Region 7 in the national finals will have a solid lineup from Cebu.

This is not just true for athletics but for 14 of Prisaa’s 17 sporting events. The other two—baseball and softball—automatically went to Bohol, since Cebu did not send teams.

To call Cebu City’s performance in the regionals a blowout is an understatement.

“Cebu City dominated 99.9 percent of the events,” said Bernard Ricablanca, the project director for national Prisaa.

“There’s probably just two or three events that Bohol won, everything else went to Cebu City and we will have an almost solid Cebu team representing Region 7 in the national finals on April 22 in Cebu,” said Ricablanca.

“Bohol won in one event in swimming and in the vocal solo competition. I could not
remember the rest but I think Cebu lost less than five gold medals to Bohol,” said Ricablanca.

Cebu City dominated badminton, chess, football, karatedo, taekwondo, sepak takraw, volleyball, basketball, dancesport, table tennis and even boxing, which was bannered by pugs from Southwestern University and University of the Visayas (UV).

Cebu will also be representing the region in the beach volleyball competiton. behind UV and University of Southern Philippines Foundation.

Cebu City did not have the usual challenge in regional competitions from Negros, when its top contenders skipped the competitions after getting into a disagreement with the Prisaa.

Ricablanca added that Bohol athletes might still be picked to play in the nationals.

“We might be selecting some Bohol players to reinforce the team, especially in the team events like basketball and football,” said Ricablanca.

Ricablanca said the preparation for the national hosting is ready and despite the state of the tracks at the Cebu City Sports Center, the athletics competition will still be held there.

“We were given the assurance that it will be ready by April,” said Ricablanca.

He added they have already identified the venues for the games.

“We are ready for the hosting,” said Ricablanca.

Athletes from 17 regions will be coming in the weeklong competitions.
