THE Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) has trimmed the number of sports events they will offer to the barangays in summer.

CCSC chairman Edward Hayco told Sun.Star Cebu that 11 sports events will be offered to the residents of Cebu City after the Holy Week. The disciplines are taekwondo, boxing, basketball, volleyball, badminton, chess, dancesport, sepak takraw, baseball/softball, athletics and table tennis.

“They will be held in 16 public school gyms in the city and it will start right after the Holy Week. These are all free,” Hayco said.

Last year, CCSC offered 17 sports events that were brought to the barangays in the
city.

“We narrowed down the number of events to 11 and they are all free for all age levels. No age limit. Even adults and parents can join,” said Hayco.

This program has gained the attention of the Philippine Sports Commission, which made CCSC’s grassroots development program the template for its nationwide sports development.

Aside from the events that are stated, CCSC is also looking to intensify its arnis program.

CCSC is looking to hold a world record-setting arnis event as its next big project.

Despite its comprehensive batted sports program, CCSC is still trying to bring softball and baseball closer to the people, especially in the mountain barangays who have shown a lot of potentials in the game.

“And what is truly inspiring is that most of (last year’s) volunteers came up to me and asked me when we will have the grassroots events again. And they came to me not just once but many times. The spirit of volunteerism among the (volunteer) athletes and coaches is really alive,” said Hayco.

Meanwhile, CCSC executive director Brando Velasquez added that the volleyball training under American coach Eric Lecain has also started.

“One thing we will do now is to have volleyball coaches train with Eric and let them do the training of the kids, while Eric will supervise them. Just like the one in Tejero when it was Eric who did the training. It was very taxing for him to do it all alone,” Velasquez said.

Lecain is a beach volleyball coach from New York who was assigned by the Philippine Sports Commission to help train the kids in the Visayas. He is stationed here in Cebu City.
