A TOTAL of P150,000 will be given to the top three Pinoy finishers in the men’s and women’s of the Vaseline Men Xterra Off-road Triathlon Series on March 18 at the Municipality of Liloan,Cebu.

On the other hand, the pros will be fighting for the $15,000 top prize for the two triathlon events—the Xterra lite and Xterra Philippines championships. The Xterra lite covers a 500-meter swim, 30K bike and 5K run, while the second event covers a 1.5K swim, 30K bike and 10K run.

Before the twin triathlon events, an Xterra trail run will be held on March 17 and will feature the 21K, 10K and 5k divisions. This was included because this will also serve as a qualifying race in the Xterra Trail Run world championships on Dec. 2 in Hawaii.

“We created this Filipino elite category to give chance to our Filipino triathletes to compete,” said Sunrise Events president Wilfred Steven Uytengsu. “The best of the regions will converge and this will give them a chance to prove that they can be very competitive. It would be great some day to see a Filipino triathlete at the podium alongside the top triathletes in the world.”

Uytengsu launched the event yesterday together with Gov. Gwen Garcia, over-all coordinator Oscar Rodriguez, Liloan Mayor Duke Frasco and race director Guy Concepcion.

This will be the second time that Liloan will be hosting the prestigious international off-road triathlon series, which will also be a qualifying race for the 17th annual Xterra World Championship off-road triathlon in Hawaii on Oct. 28.

Last year, 13 Filipinos, led by Sen. Pia Cayetano, competed in the Xterra World
Championship in Maui, Hawaii.

“We are back because of the tremendous hospitality that Cebu showed last year.. It was also like coming home because I am a Cebuano and proud to be one,” Uytengsu said.

Race director Concepcion is already feeling the pressure of designing a more challenging course after last year’s success.

“One thing I can assure our participants is that it’s going to be more challenging.” Concepcion said.

He added that the Vaseline Men Xterra team has exerted all efforts to ensure that the entire race route, including the run leg through the fishing lagoon of Papa kits, will be an interesting yet challenging segment.
