FORMER world champion Marvin Sonsona continues his comeback trail as he headlines a top-billed fight card on March 17 at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City.
Sonsona (15-1, 12 KOs), the ex-World Boxing Organization (WBO) super flyweight champion, will take on Dominican Republic’s Carlos Fulgencio (19-5-1, 12 KOs) in SGG Promotions’ new boxing series “Pinoy Knockout 1.:
“My preparation has been great and I’m currently in hard training,” said Sonsona. “I haven’t seen his style but I heard he is a good fighter because he was with Ciso (Morales) in the Mexican boxing reality show.”
After a long layoff, Sonsona believes that he is slowly regaining his championship form. Although he still isn’t as fast as he used to be, Sonsona was impressive in his comeback fight last Oct. 15, wherein he scored a unanimous decision win over Mexican Carlos Jacobo.
“When I first came back, I felt slow but now I’m slowly regaining my speed,” he said.
Sampson Lewkowicz, who also handles Sonsona along with Sammy Gello-ani, plans to bring Sonsona to the US and hone his skills in Oxnard, California under Pablo Sarmiento, the trainer of fighter Sergio Martinez.
WBO No. 2 flyweight Froilan Saludar (14-0, 11 KOs) defends his WBO Youth flyweight title against Mexican prospect Alejandro Morales (13-1-1, 7 KOs) in the co-main event of the boxing show that is loaded with talent.
