MANILA — Rain or Shine proved their mastery over B-Meg Llamados by hacking out a 91-80 victory Sunday to take a head start in the best-of-seven championship series of the 37th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governor’s Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
The lack of championship experience for the Elasto Painters, which was in the finals for the first time since joining the league in 2006, posed no problem as they outhustled the nine-time titlist Llamados in almost all departments of the game.
It seemed it was B-Meg that lost poise as the Philippine Cup champion lost Tim Cone to an ejection after the fiery mentor threw a chair on court.
Rookie Paul Lee orchestrated the Elasto Painters’ offense with enough caution and led a fiery breakaway in the final half after a tight contest in the first two quarters where they had several lead changes before B-Meg got a 39-35 lead at the end of the half.
“I am really proud of my boys. They handled well the pressure of being in the finals,” Coach Yeng Guiao said.
Jamelle Cornley led all scorers with 25 points, while Lee added 14. James Yap led B-Meg with 19 points, while Marqus Blakely and Marc Pingres had 12 apiece.
