THE long and agonizing wait is finally over and Cebu City can now claim as the hub of chess tournaments in the world.
This was stamped by the World Headquarters of the Guinness World Records Limited in London when it blessed Cebu City the new record holder for the Largest Board Game Tournament.
The Cebu City Sports Commission, the prime mover of the event, was able to gather a total of 43,157 participants, which easily surpassed the previous record of 1,214 participants in Krasnoyarsk City in Russia in 2007.
“Somewhere along the way I was worried kay basi na interchanged or na missplaced ang atong claim number. Guol kaayo ko, kay sa ka busy sa GWR basin ma-technical unya ta, kay wala man nila makuha ang records. But because of our persistence and continued communication with them, na-assess gyud nila ang atong mga documents. Gikuyawan ko nga mawala ang mga documents kay pulos to original,” CCSC chairman Edward Hayco told Sun.Star Cebu.
According to Hayco, GWR made the confirmation last July 18, and he will now wait for the certificate to arrive so that it will be presented to the Cebuanos and those who took part of the event.
