DEFENDING champion University of San Carlos (USC) notched its first win in the collegiate division of this year’s Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) football tournament, 2-1, over 2010 champion University of Cebu (UC) yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Complex football pitch.
After a 2-0 loss to University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) in their season opener last week, USC came to the game yesterday with an aggressive approach to their attack.
The aggressive attacking paid off as Karl Vincent Arcenas scored an early goal for USC. Arcenas sank a well-calculated free kick a yard away from the penalty box.
Christian Agot gave USC a 2-0 advantage in the 35th minute with a volley inside the box off a rebound.
UC narrowed the lead and made it 2-1 after Christian Vasquez struck from point-blank range in the 38th minute.
In the second game, the University of the Visayas (UV) rallied in the second half for a 2-1 win against winless University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF).
John Michael Gomora broke the lull with a goal in the 55th minute and Albert Torrecampo made it 2-0, hitting in the 69th.
