THE University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) won four gold medals and three silvers to keep the 2012 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) badminton title last Sunday at the Metro Sports in Lahug.
USJ-R won the gold medal in the men’s singles A, men’s doubles and women’s singles A and finished second in the men’s singles B and women’s doubles.
The University San Carlos (USC) and the University of Cebu (UC) both finished with two gold medals, with the Carolinians pocketing the men’s singles B and women’s singles B titles, while the Webmasters bagged the women’s gold medal.
USC also had two silvers courtesy of its men’s doubles team, while UC took three silvers.
USJ-R’s Charlez Plaza survived a tough challenge from UC’s Aljun Penute, a freshman, to win the gold medal in the men’s A division in three sets, 21-18, 18-21, and 21-19.
The tandem of Jeffrey Lepaopao and John Roy Densing won the men’s doubles gold medal for USJ-R after beating John Paul Diamante and PY Perez of USC, 21-13, 24-26, 21-19.
The Men’s B gold, however, escaped from USJ-R’s grasps after Jan Jan Vequezo of USC snatched it away from Peter Paul Tan, 21-12, 12-21, 29-27.
Veteran Mary Rose Montebon of USJ-R defeated Julie Marie Malazarte of UC, 21-14, 22-20, to win the gold in the women’s A competition, while Celia Marie Kimberly Li kept the gold in women’s B after beating UC’s Jeralyn Taboada, 21-12, 21-19.
UC, however, did not go home empty-handed as the immovable tandem of Irish Mae Ares and Jessa Mae Lagat defended the title after beating USJ-R’s Jam Jam Collamat and Nessie Benitez, 21-16, 21-14,
