SWU, USC, USJ-R earn slots to Cesafi volleyball semis

DEFENDING champion Southwestern University Lady Cobras secured the top spot and a sure entry to the semifinal round of the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) volleyball tournament.
SWU sealed its semifinals appearance after beating the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), 25-20, 25-19, 25-16, yesterday at the University of San Carlos gym.
The win gave SWU three points to advance to semifinals on top of the women’s collegiate division tanking with a total of 12 points.
“We are already working on with strategies and hoping to retain our dominance in the tournament,” said SWU head coach Jordan Paca.
SWU is gunning for a grandslam this year.
The University of San Carlos also made it to the semifinals after a scoring 10 points from their four wins and one loss.
It still has one more game next week but whatever the outcome, it is already assured of a semis spot.
USJ-R, as of the moment, is at third with 3-2.
The fourth and final slot will be contested between the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) and University of Cebu, which will face each other this Saturday.
In the men’s division, making it to the semifinals are USPF, USC, USJ-R and UV.
USPF made it to the next round despite having one more scheduled match next weekend.
It will face USJ-R in its final elimination round match.
USPF is on top of the standing with 18 points, punctuated by its 25-19, 25-23, 27-25 victory over Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U).
USC is at second with 17 points. It ousted SWU, 25-20, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21 yesterday.
USJ-R is at third with 13 points, while University of the Visayas with 10 points, with one game remaining against Cebu Institute of Technology-University, is in the fourth spot.
In the secondary division, girls’ defending champion USJ-R earned another trip to the semifinals after defeating Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, 25-9, 25-7.
It leads the division with 10 points.
USC and SWU share the second spot with eight points, while the University of Cebu is at third with seven points.
