GUV Cup honors athletes who won scholarships

THE Gov. Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup took time to honor 24 players who were dubbed as “Garbo sa Guv Cup ” during the opening of its 8th Season at the Cebu International Convention Center yesterday.
A total of 59 teams will be competing for the three division titles this year – 16 teams in the Kiddies Division for Girls, 29 squads in the women’s division and 14 in the men’s divison.
The tournament that started in 2005 has dramatically grown bigger. Yesterday, the organizers presented the 24 players who are now enjoying college scholarships not just from Cebu universities but those from Manila as well.
Leading the honorees was Mary Joy Dacoron, who hails the bustling town of Oslob in Southern Cebu and is now playing for Adamson University in the Universitys Athletic Association of the Philippines.
Joining her were 18 players who are now with the Southwestern University-- Chariza Mae Rico, Gaye Marie Alferez, Crisheil May Suba-an, Crisley Ann Sucalit, Reyet Varga, John Lorenze Famoso, Han Delmar Yordan and Carl Alivio of Mandaue City, Renee Coleen, Nathalie Gimeno and Junabelle Anne Gempero of Moalboal, Dorothy Nova of Oslob, Veada Reeya Cuevas of Alegria, John Paul Romo and Mary Angielo Castillo of Catmon, Relan Taneo and Rommel Pepito of Liloan, Roberto Vocal of Dalaguete and Francis Pepito of Compostela.
