MANILA—Barangay Ginebra Kings came prepared and crushed new team Globalport Batang Pier, 110-90, Sunday in the opening of the 38th PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
As expected, veterans Mark Caguioa, Jay-Jay Helterbrand and Rudy Hatfield teamed up with transferee LA Tenorio to provide the intensity and firepower that saw them lead by as much as 24 points.
“I am happy. Malaking pasalamat namin we got over the opening game, marami kasing distractions sa opening. We started on the right foot sa game. Chemistry o yung pagkakakilala ng bawat isa it takes time, “ said Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen, whose
team won its first opening game in three seasons.
With better preparation, the Kings showed enough aggressiveness in their offense and a tight defense that served notice of their title aspiration bid to end a five-year title drought. They won a conference crown for the last time in 2008 Fiesta Conference.
The Kings put up with a well-balanced game and Caguioa, Rico Maierhofer, Billy Mamaril, Rudy Hatfield and rookies Kieth Jensen and Chris Ellis finished with double digits.
