USC beats UC, makes finals

Pomposo Atillo scored a hat trick to lift the University of San Carlos over the University of Cebu, 4-2, and bag a spot in the finals of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) college football competition at the Cebu City Sports Center yesterday.
USC will face the winner between the University of San Jose-Recoletos and the University of the Visayas, whose match was moved to Tuesday because of the downpour.
John Roy Melgo banked in a header from Carlo Abellana in the sixth minute for an early lead by USC, before Atillo started his scoring rampage from long range in the 31st for a 2-0 lead.
UC retaliated in the second half with Neri Mole Jr. finding the back of the net in the 55th to make it 2-1 but Atillo cut their excitement short with an attack from left flank five minutes later for a 3-1 cushion.
In the 75th, UC’s hopes got rekindled after getting a penalty and Reymund Torres converted the spot kick to make it 3-2.
UC, the 2010 champion, could have made it 3-3 in the 80th but Axel Parfel’s attempt from a penalty area scramble just sailed high.
And Atillo made UC pay for that miss as he scored an insurance goal in stoppage time to book a ticket to the finals.
USC coach Garry Panagsagan said conditioning will be his top priority in the one-week break.
