THE UNIVERSITY of San Carlos (USC) and University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR) won a back-to-back titles in the collegiate and secondary division of the 12th season of the Cebu Athletic Foundation Incorporated (Cesafi) volleyball tournament at the USC Gym.
The USC women’s collegiate team dethroned three-time champion Southwestern University, 22-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-23 and for its first title in the Cesafi.
It was the powerful spikes from the USC’s beach volleyball mainstays Chona Gesulga and Suzette Panis that contributed a lot to the team’s victory over defending champion-SWU.
“I am really happy with what my teams have achieved this season. It’s very rare to be able to win a title in the men and women’s collegiate volleyball, especially since we were up against solid teams,” USC head coach Norvie Nabuga said.
USC also defended their dominance in the men’s collegiate division after defeating the gritty Univesity of the Visayas, 25-27, 25-20, 25-16, 15-25.
USC rallied behind Kenneth BEnsig, Mark Joseph Bornis, Albert Flores, Leon Mari Gaspar, Ryan Mark Abut and Earven Gallegos to foil UV.
In the secondary division, USJ-R head coach Rolando Potot got emotional after ruling the girls and boys division. USJ-R’s girls was hampered after six players left the squad this year.
“It did cripple my team when they left because they were my key players. We really didn’t expect to win this year but we only hoped that we could defend our win,” Potot said.
The USJ-R girls beat SWU, 26-24, 21-25, 25-21, 18-25, 15-6 while their boys team dethroned University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), 25-22, 25-17, 25-16.
