Alcoseba eyes import for friendly vs. SMB

M. LHUILLIER Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños head coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba is looking for an import for the two-day Cebu City Cup on Oct. 26 and 27 at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Niños will play the Asean Basketball League’s (ABL) San Miguel Beermen in a two-day friendly.
Having an import could help neutralize the height and size advantage of the Beermen, who have two imports—the 6’6” Gabe Freeman and the 6’10” Brian Williams.
Aside from the two American players, the Beermen have Erick Menk and Asi Taulava to man the middle, while Leo Avenido, Chris Branchero and Christian Luanzon are the other players to watch out for.
“We will try to put up a good fight. This SMB team is very strong they have a very tall and strong front line so we need to have an import in order to compete. And I am looking for one now,” Alcoseba said.
The ABL will open in January yet but SMB, which failed to win the title last July, is training early to have a better preparation when the fourth season of the regional basketball tournament starts.
Before the San Miguel vs. MLKP match, the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) and the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras will play a curtain raiser.
Both teams are also preparing for the Philippines Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) which will start on Nov. 13 in Cebu.
USJ-R will play the University of the Visayas Green Lancers, while SWU will face the winner of the Southern Islands Over-All Championship.
