THE University of San Carlos ladies team must beat the Ateneo de Manila University today to secure a semifinals slot in the University Games football competition in Bacolod.
USC started strong with a 3-0 win over Rizal Technological University, with Mary Christine Gonzales scoring twice and Jesuseane Gerobiese adding one. However, USC lost to the University of Sto. Tomas, 1-0, after keeper Maria Cielo Perez lost grip of the ball in the muddy and slippery field.
“We have to win, even by just one goal, to make it to the semis and we have to start strong,” head coach Garry Panagsagan said.
It’s going to be tough game against Ateneo as it is also aiming for a spot in the semifinals after draw with UST in their last game. A win by USC will put them at No. 2 in the group, next to UST, which lost the title to Far Eastern University last year.
USC made the semifinals of the tournament for three straight years before skipping last year’s tournament.
There are 19 teams in the football tournament with 11 in the men’s division and eight in the women’s division.
De La Salle University, University of the Philippines, Xavier University and Foundation University are in the other bracket.
The rest of the members of the USC team are Diandra Alenton, Chryselle Sistoso, Christine Catarinen, Rechei Caumeran, Shandra Colina, Elsie Juezan, Aiko Manaloto, Ruth Mantilla, Joyce Maw, Janice Paglinawan, Hannah Pinote, Juanita Romualdez, Angeli Ruete, Renee Songalia, Sam Su, Maritoni Trebol and Sandy Miyagi.
