SEVERAL schools in Cebu were looking forward to the second staging of the National Students beach volley tournament —the qualifying event that would determine which team will represent the country to the Asian Universities Beach Volleyball Championships.
Last year, it was the University of Southern Philippines Foundation’s (USPF) duo of Erika Verano and Apple Saraum who lorded over the competitions.
However, this year, no teams from the south, who were invited to join the qualifier, much to the dismay of the Cebuano teams.
“It would have been nice if the organizers continued their program, where they will have qualifying rounds in the Visayas and Mindanao,” Southwestern University (SWU) athletics director Ryan Aznar said.
SWU has been one of the strong contenders in beach volleyball in the country.
Aznar said the program was a good initiative in giving players from Vis-Min a chance to improve their skills and a chance to compete in the international level.
This year's representatives are Maru Banaticla and Judy Caballejo of the University of Santo Tomas, and Jennifer Manzano and Monique Tiangco of De La Salle University.
Banaticla and Judy Caballejo moved closer to clinching a quarterfinals berth after defeating Korea, 21-13, 21-15, yesterday. They downed Laos-1, 21-9, 21-17, but lost to Thailand-1, 12-21, 8-21, in the afternoon session. (PR)
