INNODATA and Erich Rafael Construction will face off in the inter-company finals of the 15th Aboitiz Football Cup after hurdling their semifinal foes yesterday.
Innodata survived Unitech, 3-2, in a penalty shootout with Jaypee Ejercito, Adrianne Mejaran and Darwin Bordalba converting their shots.
In regulation, Ejercito got the first goal just nine minutes in, while Genmar delos Santos got the equalizer. During the shootout, both teams were tied after three
kickers before Bordalba converted his shot and Cromwell Ho missed his.
In the other match, Erich Rafael Construction nabbed a convincing 5-0 win against Convergys-A, thanks to a hat trick by Jessie Roy Melgo, while Michael Masong and Rodney Orale had one each.
Innodata and Erich Rafael Construction will play the finals on Jan. 27, 9 a.m., at the Aboitiz Sports Field.
In the men’s open matches, Cebu Queen City United topped its group after a lopsided win against Avengers FC in yesterdays’s men’s open matches.
CQCU crushed Avengers FC, 8-0, to lead Bracket B and earn a slot in the quarterfinals.
Junard Aguilar had two goals, while Dan Villarico, Joseph Rodriguez, Xamxin Olinayi and Rene Menchavez had one each.
This is a good sign for the team that will face a strong Pachanga FC next Saturday in the PFF Smart Club National Finals.
Pachanga recently signed OJ Clarino and other players from the United Football League champions Stallions FC.
But even if they dominated all their games in the Aboitiz Football Cup, they still are not certain with their chances against Pachanga.
“If we based it on the games played here, we are prepared but it will be a tough match against these top caliber players from the UFL,” said CQCU head coach Mario Ceniza.
But Ceniza is still hopeful that the three-game losing streak against Pachanga will end this Saturday, now that have the support of the home crowd.
In other games, Crazy Horse edged Apas Mizkits, 1-0, on Epifanio Ynot’s lone goal, while Albert Nangkil towed Don Bosco United FC-B against Bro Nationals, 1-0. Andre Antigua and Tom Booth brought their golden boot and banged in four goals each in Atletico Cebu 16-0 rout of, 16-0, while Samba whipped University of San Jose Recoletos -FC, 3-1.
