ALA Promotions immediately kicks off 2013 with a big bang as it holds a top-billed fight between two world champions.

Donnie Nietes will defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) light flyweight title against mandatory challenger and current WBO mini flyweight champion Moises Fuentes on March 2 at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino.

“With all the negotiations that we’ve been through, it was one of the toughest. Zanfer is the biggest promoter in Mexico and we really didn’t expect this. Bringing in a world champion was a challenge,” ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer said in a press conference announcing “Pinoy Pride XVII – World Champion vs. World Champion.”

ALA Promotions had two world title fights last year and both were staged in Manila.

However, this time ALA Promotions decided to hold the fight in Cebu because of the Cebuano fans’ full support to boxing.

“It is a special fight that we want to give back to Cebu. We are from Cebu. ALA Promotions is proud to say that we are from Cebu,” said Aldeguer.

It will be the first time in Cebu City that a current world champion faces another world champion.

Fuentes, 27, has an impressive 16-1 record with eight knockouts, which includes wins over Puerto Rican superstar Ivan Calderon and former world champion Raul Garcia.

But Nietes and his coach Edmund Villamor isn’t intimidated by Fuentes’s resume and even pointed out the Mexican champion’s weakness.

“We have to come in. His weakness is that he doesn’t know how to fight moving back,” said Villamor, who has guided his 30-year-old ward in seven world title fights in two weight divisions.

“Based on what I saw, he is not a fighter. He only becomes a fighter when his opponent is moving back. He doesn’t like fighting bell-to-bell,” said Nietes, 31-1-3 with 17 knockouts. “Ivan was already old and that is why he knocked him out, while I am still active and at my peak. I will do my best to defend my crown.”

Also set to see action in the boxing event is unbeaten WBO Asia-Pacific super bantamweight titleholder Genesis Servania and former world title challenger Jimrex Jaca.

Servania is facing an Asian fighter in preparation for a possible clash with three-division world champion Fernando Montiel in June.
