Pagara in a must-win fight vs. Merlin tonight-A A +A
Saturday, January 19, 2013
WHILE most of the people are celebrating the Sinulog Festival, promising undefeated prospect Albert Pagara will encounter experienced Jilo Merlin tonight at the I.T. Park.
The year 2013 will be a defining year for Pagara because if he continues his impressive showing in his next three fights, his promoter, ALA Promotions, will be giving him a step up in competition – possibly a regional title fight. So this is a must-win fight for the surging 18-year-old former amateur standout.
Pagara, who only had his professional debut back in 2011, is gunning for his 15th straight win against Merlin. He is 14-0 with 10 knockouts.
Last year was a banner year for Pagara, when he won all his four fights including the biggest win of his career against former Pan Asian Boxing Association light flyweight titleholder Marvin Tampus.
In spite of the 24-year-old Merlin’s dismal 12-14-2 record with just two knockouts, he shouldn’t be taken for granted because he has fought some talented boxers in his division like current World Boxing Organization bantamweight king Pungluang Sor Singyu, former world champion Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym and former world title challenger Sod Kokietgym.
RP light flyweight champion Jerson Mancio (16-3-3, 7 KOs) faces off with a rejuvenated Gerpaul Valero (13-13, 9 KOs) in the main supporting event.
Mancio is coming off with back-to-back wins after losing to Junichi Ebisuoka in Japan last year.
