ONE of Cebu's top beach volley players, Jonrey Sasing, lived up to his lofty billing as he dominated the 1st Sinulog Beach Volley Cup yesterday at the Fort San Pedro.
Sasing scored a perfect 168 points after winning all of the final eight games to become the last man standing in the King of the Beach format of the competition. With this format, the tournament becomes an individual competition as opposed to the usual two-man team in beach volleyball competitions.
Even if he was the second to the last player to get into the playoffs, he proved once again why he is Cebu’s best player in this sport after sweeping all his matches.
Coming in second place was his teammate in Team Cebu City, Edward Ybañez, who scored 152 points.
Ybañez had a shaky start but picked up his game in the last few matches.
He was saved by his last game after he scored 16 points, which put him a point above third placer Mike Abria who closed the game 151 points.
Playoff leader Rommel Pepito was relegated to fourth place after scored 149 points.
"There's no question that coming in the final games, Cebu City top bets dominated this competition. But the tournament was really fun because everybody took turns in taking the lead," said organizer Eric Lecain of the Philippine Sports Commission.
He also added that young players like Abria and Pepito also showed potential as they went head to head with veteran players.
Sasing recieved P10,000, while runner-up Ybañez got P5,000. Abria and Pepito pocketed P1,500 and P500, respectively.
Next weekend, PSC Commissioner Ritchie Garcia might be present to watch the ladies in action.
