SYRIA won the final two singles matches but it was already too late as the Philippines assured itself of a spot in the second round against Thailand in the Asia/Oceania Davis Cup Group 2 tie.

Elbert Anasta lost to Syria’s top seed, while Treat Huey also bowed to no. 2 Marc Abdelnour, 7-6, 6-2.

Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) official Randy Villanueva, who is in charge of the Davis Cup, said there is a big chance for Lapu-Lapu City to host the game between the Philippines and Thailand this April.

If this pushes through, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza will continue to support the event.

“I’ve talked with Efren Belarmino, the general manager of Plantation Bay Resort and Spa, and I told him if Philta wants to bring back Davis Cup this coming April, I welcome it,” Radaza said.

Today, the Philta board and Belarmino are expected to announce in a press conference if the Thailand vs. Philippines match will be held in Lapu-Lapu City.
