DEFENDING champions Mactan Enerzone/Salazar Colleges of Sciences and Institute of Technology (SCSIT) Blazing Batters showed their sheer power and skills to keep the 2013 Sinulog Cup men’s open softball title yesterday at the Labangon Elementary School grounds.
Enerzone/SCSIT opened its title bid with a 9-2 fifth-inning regulation win over Team Wirednook then followed it up with a masterful 13-1 fourth-inning regulation win against the Landing Boys of Lilo-an about an hour later.
The defending champions had a total of nine home runs in the two games, three against Wirednook and six against Landing Lilo-an.
Right field Abrine Pautan had 3 RBIs in his two homers, while Sherwin Tabar had one.
Second base Roldan Bacarisas, fielder Marvin Ngujo and catcher Jackson Genolaga had two home runs each against the Landing Boys.
Against Wirednook, Enerzone/SCSIT put the game away at the top of the second inning after scoring four runs.
Although Wirednook refused to give in and John Paul Unabia struck his own home run to send Ennie de la Cerna to homeplate, the Blazing Batters could not be denied as it was all Enerzone/SCSIT all the way until the game was stopped by virtue of the mercy rule.
The defending champions were even fiercer against the Landing Boys as they scored four in the first, three in the second and six more runs at the top of the fourth. Vicente Visoc scored the lone run for Landing-Liloan at the bottom of the fourth.
This is the third straight year for the Blazing Batters to win the Sinulog Cup title.
