AS the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP)-sanctioned Sinclair Basketball Super-League Under 22 tournament is set to start, Visayas Regional coordinator Rey Cañete is hoping the title will stay in Cebu.
In 2011, a Lapu-Lapu team that was bannered by former University of the Visayas Green Lancer Chad Harlow Villanil, University of San Jose-Recoletos power forward Miguel Tabaloc and University of Cebu slot man Gil Wagas won the national title after beating a Davao City-based team in the championship.
This feat earned Lapu-Lapu the right to host the national final, which is slated in July.
Cañete said that it would be tougher this time as the tournament is now for younger players and more cities are participating.
“To maximize our pool, we have decided to hold one championship for Cebu City and Lapu-Lapu City. This would make our entry stronger.
Although we are entitled to at least have an elimination round of 10 teams, it would be better if we can have one united elimination round for the slot to the regional finals,” Cañete said.
Sinclair Superleague organizer Darren Evangelista of Evangelista Aquatics and Sports Management Inc. told Sun.Star Cebu that the field is now bigger as it now involves cities like Kalibo Aklan, Ilo-ilo and Bacolod.
