EVEN before the country’s biggest golf tournament of the year could blast off on Thursday (Feb. 21), two guys I love dearly had been on their toes for months now to make sure the twin events are held hitch-free.

Nimrod Quiñones and Jeric Hechanova have had sleepless nights moving their butts out. Their job had been, still is, to make their second homes in tip-top shape when the PAL Interclub Golf championship is on Feb. 21 to March 2.

Cebu’s picturesque Alta Vista has been Nimrod’s second abode for quite sometime now, going there virtually every day at 5 a.m. and coming home only when the course is done hosting the daily needs of its members.

Suddenly, Nimrod’s job as a journalist for decades has become second fiddle for him. But a perennial man of the ink (now laptop?), Nimrod still makes it a point to write his well-read sports column in his blog.

“I just could not kick the habit (writing a column),” said to me one time by Nimrod, who was the newspaper’s managing editor when he moved to Alta Vista as the club’s general manager.

Alta Vista will host the PAL Seniors tournament together with Club Filipino de Cebu Feb. 21-24. Alta Vista plays a dual, crucial, role as it also serves as the Media Center for the event.

Cebu Country Club takes its turn at hosting the PAL Men’s Regular on Feb. 27-March 2 together with Mactan Island Country Club, which sees its baptism of fire in the nation’s national team event.

Like Nimrod, Jeric has been a friend of mine for years.

Jeric and I started working together, beginning with the Philippine Open in the late ’80s. A scarred veteran in managing elite courses like Southwoods, John Hay, Wack Wack and Sta. Elena, Jeric was perfect for CCC when CCC president Montito Garcia tapped him for the GM job.

Thus, should Alta Vista and CCC stand out in their hosting chores at PAL Interclub, tip your hats off to Nimrod and Jeric.

Not only because they are my bosom buddies, but also because they are men of honor, integrity and good disposition.
