THE Abellana National School (ANS) softball team took home the World Boxing Organization (WBO)-supported Kids Kontra Drugas Youth Men Softball title after topping the four-team competition in Labangon Elementary School grounds last Saturday.
ANS softball players showed they are going to be the new toast of the town when they showed they are now capable of beating older players – through a dramatic tie breaker this time.
ANS and two other entries, Siteworks and Jewellers, all finished the tournament with identical 2-1 win-loss cards, but ANS won the championship title since they had scored more runs–14 against 9–that were scored by both contenders.
The Jewellers took the second place finish because of the winner-over-the-other rule after beating Siteworks 3-1 the other Saturday.
ANS lost to Siteworks Construction, 8-5, last Saturday, while beating the Jewellers, 9-6, and defeated the Palarong Pambansa bound Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) Girls Softball team, 5-4.
ANS pocketed P2,000, Tisa Jewellers got P1,000 and Siteworks took P500.
The Women’s Softball title on the other hand, went to the Strikers after scoring its second win via 3-1 over the Mactan Enerzone
Catcher Joy Adolfo scored the first run for the Strikers in the first inning and pitcher Jam-Jam Salada and shortstop Balingkasag scored in the fourth inning, while only third base player Maris Padigos scored the lone run for Enerzone.
Punta Princesa Elementary School won the Elementary Girls Softball title after beating Labangon Elementary School, 14-2, while Labangon ES returned the favor after beating Punta ES, 3-1, for the Elementary Boys title.
The two-Saturday event was organized by Mexican-American sportsman Michael Angel Lopez and was supported by WBO through its vice president and Asia-Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo Jr.
