Sevillano, Pason top Paknaan chess

HENZI Kylle Sevillano and Allan Pason, two of Cebu’s brightest future in chess, split the titles in the tournaments held in Barangay Paknaan in Mandaue City.
Sevillano won the Mixed Open (Non-Master) tournament, while Pason topped the Juniors competition for 18 years old and below tournament held in Paknaan National High School gym last weekend.
This weekend, Paknaan will again host another tournament, the Paknaan Open Chess Tournament which offers P20,000 in cash prizes to the top 10 finishers.
Sevillano scored a total of 6.0 points after seven rounds losing only once, while Pason finished with 5.0 points after six rounds to win.
Sevillano defeated Romeo Labradilla in the opening round, and also won over Samuel Tinio in the second, over Glicel Gepiga in round three, before losing his fourth round assignment to Cephas Seguisabal.
The Shell National Active Youth Kiddies champion then bounced hard in the next three rounds beating Kraig Quinain, Godfrey Villamor and Vicmil Pepito to win the title.
Those who finished behind behind Sevillano were Villamor (5.5pts), Pason (5.5), Pepito (5.0), Dione Minoza (5.0), Carlito Flores (5.0), Leo Cortes (4.5), Tinio (4.5), Luna (4.5) and Quinain (4.5) respectively.
Pason, meanwhile, won all his matches, except in the third round against Felix Shaun Balbona, to win the title.
The Guinness World Record tournament Grand champion defeated Adrian Basilgo, Aldritz Pondoyo, Christian Pondoyo, Diego Claro and Vic Glysen Derotas respectively.
Sevillano and Pason pocketed P2,000 each for their respective fetes, while all top 10 finishers also received cash prizes.
