THE University of the Visayas Passerelle team is looking forward to its title-retention bid in the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP)-organized Youth Men’s U-16 tournament next month.
The UV Passerelle squad is preparing for the battle ahead by joining a tournament for players 19 years old and below.
“We are very proud of this team. Since we were organized in 2010, we have already won 10 championship titles, not to mention our runner-up finishes. These guys deserve another shot at the national title,” Passerelle coach Jaymar Canoy told Sun.Star Cebu.
In their recent courtesy call on the school president, Rep. Eduardo Gullas gave them his best wishes for their next competition.
“What is more important is your studies. Do not neglect your studies because when you grow old, there will be no more basketball for you. But for now, all I am wishing for is good luck and please stay with us until you graduate in college,” Gullas told the young players.
Last year, the UV U-16 squad won he SBP National U-16 title in Baguio City.
This year, the Lancers went undefeated in the Cebu Youth Basketball League (CYBL) and the Cebu Elite Basketball League U-16 on their way to the national finals.
“We have more to prove. These young players are capable of playing big. But we still have to work harder in order to achieve our goal. The UV Passerelle team is still young and we still have a lot to learn. For now, all we are focusing on is the title defense,” added co-coach Randy de la Pisa.
The SBP National U-16 tournament is slated in the first week of April in Manila. UV team manger Gerald Anthony “Sam-Sam” Gullas is upbeat on the chances of the team.
“Although we considered playing in Manila a tough assignment, we can assure that our Passerelle team is capable of winning not only in Baguio but in Manila as well,” stressed the young Gullas.
Four of the current members of the UV Passerelle team are already playing for the regular UV high school team – the Baby Lancers – Dave Cabanilla, June Kent Manzo III, Vilmer Niño Marquez and Gerald Fernandez.
They were among the seven players who were part of last year’s champion team.
