THREE Cebuanos made it to the women’s national team after passing last week’s tryouts conducted by Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) secretary general Vangie De Jesus.
“We have included three players from the Cebu tryouts. They are Abigail Praca, Danika Yolanda Gendrauli and Raphril Aguilar,” De Jesus said in a text message sent to Sun.Star Cebu.
De Jesus, who had a press conference with the Philippine Sports Commission yesterday, added the rest of the players are from UAAP and NCAA.
Southwestern University (SWU) athletics director Ryan Aznar said he was overwhelmed after learning two of his players, Gendrauli and Aguilar, made the national team.
“It is a morale booster to the volleyball program of the Visayas-Mindanao area, proving that not only the players from the National Capital Region have the talent to be in our national team,” Aznar said.
He credited the province-wide Gov. Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup, ran by the Cebu Volleyball Association for discovering not only his two key players but as well as Praca of the University of San Jose Recoletos. The three of them were discovered during the GUV Cup.
Aguilar and Gendrauli, both SAC awardees, who are currently in Moalboal to train for the 16th Nestea beach volley Visayas and Mindanao elimination this weekend, cried after learning the news.
“I couldn’t believe I made it, I am still in shock and out of words,” said Aguilar, who hails from Samboan.
