AFTER another successful title defense on the road, International Boxing Federation bantamweight king Johnriel Casimero returns home.
Casimero and his team are scheduled to arrive in the Philippines tomorrow morning after a unanimous decision win against Luis Alberto Rios last Sunday in Panama City, Panama.
“Casimero and the team will be arriving in Manila on March 21 at 6 a.m. from Los Angeles together with (John Mark) Apolinario. Casimero’s team will connect to Cebu via Philippine Airlines, arriving in Cebu at 9:15 a.m. of March 21,” Casimero’s promoter Sammy Gello-ani told Sun.Star Cebu.
Casimero outclassed hometown bet Rios by a huge margin with scores of 119-109, 119-109 and 118-110.
“I wish to thank everyone who hoped and prayed that Casimero will bring his title back home. His win in his mandatory defense was convincing. There was no knockdown but Rios was hurt more by Casimero’s consistent jabs and straights. After feeling the strong punches of Casimero, Rios kept on back-pedaling and avoided mixing toe-to-toe with Casimero. The three judges gave Casimero a wide margin,” said Gello-ani of his 23-year-old ward’s performance.
This was Casimero’s fourth win on foreign soil. He has fought overseas six times – in Mexico, Argentina, South Africa, Panama and Nicaragua.
After another draw, it seems as though there won’t be another rematch between John Mark Apolinario and Roberto Vasquez.
“The draw has created a problem since there is no champion yet and the promoter has considerably spent already sizeable amount of money to have an interim champion to be the next mandatory challenger. There are no plans yet for the rematch as of now,” said Gello-ani.
The interim World Boxing Association (WBA) bantamweight fight between Apolinario and Vasquez ended in a split draw. The first fight last Nov. 3 in Argentina was declared a majority draw.
