MANILA—Arizona Reid scored 27 points, while Ryan Arana fired 21 as Rain or Shine routed Globalport Batang Pier, 94-74, on Saturday to take the early lead in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governors’ Cup at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo City.
Down by just two points, 23-21, in the opening quarter, Reid started his move to put the Elasto Painters on top by eight points, 41-33, at the half en route to their second straight win in the season-ending conference.
“Malaking bagay sa short conference format ang 2-0 agad. It’s the best chance you get to go to the next round. We have to win early. We are trying to get Gabe Norwood and Jeff back into their regular rythm. Gaganda pa yung laro pag nakabalik na sila.” said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao.
Markeith Cummings tried to spark a rally for Batang Pier, but it was to no avail as the Elasto Painters seemed unstoppable and posted a 71-58 lead going into the final frame.
“Masaya na ako kay Reid. He’s working hard on the boards, he shot better now and he’s defending well. I am not looking for anything more, I am looking for the guys to blend well. Ryan (Arana) Paul Lee and Beau Belga played well today. That’s the usual ideal situation that we really wanted.
A five-day break is good way to get Gabe and Jeff into regular practice. They should be 85 to 90 percent when we take Petron,” added Guiao.
Norwood and Chan are still on an extended rest after seeing action for Gilas Pilipinas in the Fiba Asia Championships.
Aside from Reid and Arana, also contributing for the Elasto Painters were Paul Lee with 15 and Belga and Jay-Arr Quinahan, who had six each.
Cummings topscored for Batang Pier with 23 points, Solomon Mercado had 13 and Willie Miller had eight.
Meanwhile, Meralco seeks its second straight win as it faces Barako Bull, while Barangay Ginebra will parade 6’5 Dior Lowhorn against sister team Petron Blaze today in the resumption of the games at the Araneta Coliseum.
