FOUR talented Cebuano footballers will get a football experience of a lifetime with a three-week educational and training camp in Longborough, United Kingdom.
Right winger Josh Rupert Asignar, defender Tristan Karl Enad, midfielder Yuan Josemari Reña and left winger Charles Unabia, all from Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC), earned a slot in the 22-member Philippine Under-11 squad that will travel to UK.
“We are very proud of these four kids. They have undergone a series of tryouts and they have proven themselves well,” said Cebu Football Association board member Raffy Musni in yesterday’s press conference and send-off at the CFA office.
Asignar, Enad, Reña and Unabia were picked by 11-Under head coach Eleazar Fabroada in a tryout last month here in Cebu.
DBTC coach Dave Gerali is proud of his players for rising to the occasion and earning a place in the national squad.
“I’m proud as a coach because it shows our grassroots program is effective,” he said.
Cebu has the biggest delegation with four players picked to join the educational and training camp.
“This is the first time for Cebu,” said CFA vice-president Rico Navarro.
The four young footballers along with their coach, Gerali, is leaving for Manila today. They will be leaving for UK on Aug. 23 and will return on Sept. 15.
Aside from academics and training, the PH 11-Under squad will also be experiencing live Premier League and World Cup qualifier matches.
According to Musni, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) is molding the 11-Under players for a possibility at qualifying for the 17-Under World Cup in 2019.
Navarro reminded the kids to do their best and be at their best behavior because they are not just bringing the name of their school nor Cebu, but the whole country. He told the kids at the end of the send-off a phrase he borrowed from the recent Fiba Asia men’s championships silver medalist Gilas Pilipinas.
“Puso. Laban Pilipinas.”
