IT WAS a tough weekend for Filipino pugs that fought internationally as five of seven lost.
Roilo Golez (14-11-1, 5 KOs) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) mini-flyweight No. 1 contender Mateo Handig (13-6, 7 KOs) lost their regional title fights in Reynosa, Mexico.
Mexican Armando Santos (12-3, 7 KOs) defeated Golez for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) USNBC flyweight belt by a unanimous decision, 117-110, 118-109 and 119-108. Handig also bowed to IBF No. 5 Ganigan Lopez (23-5, 15 KOs) by unanimous decision, 116-112, 116-112 and 110-118.
In Donetsk, Ukraine, Cebuano Jason Canoy (16-4-2, 11 KOs) suffered another stumbling block following a technical decision loss to Oleksandr Hryshchuk (13-0, 5 KOs). The World Boxing Association Inter-Continental flyweight title fight went to the scorecards after the bout was stopped in the seventh round and three judges saw the Ukranian winning, 69-64, 70-63 and 69-65.
In the same event, Gen. Santos City native Juan Purisima (11-4-1, 4 KOs) dropped a unanimous decision to unbeaten WBA International flyweight king Artem Dalakian (8-0, 5 KOs).
The scorecards read, 120-105, 120-106 and 119-106.
Meanwhile, in the undercard of the Abner Mares vs. Jhonny Gonzalez bout at the Stubhub Center in Carson, California, 36-year-old journeyman Juanito Rubillar (49-22-7, 24 KOs) suffered a fourth -round knockout loss to undefeated Mexican prospect Rey Vargas (16-0, 15 KOs). Rubillar was stopped in the 2:58 mark in one-sided fight.
