USPF, UC eye 1st win-A A +A

WINLESS teams University of Cebu Webmasters (UC) and University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers (USPF) will try to barge into the winning column when they clash in the main game of the 2013 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum this afternoon.
In the high school match, University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers (5-2) will try to strengthen their hold on second place as they face the struggling Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildkittens (3-3) at 5 p.m.
UC, a two-time champion, has lost its first three matches in the Cesafi. The Webmasters lost to the UV Green Lancers, 81-62, University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), 70-65, and defending champion Southwestern University, 81-68.
On the other hand, USPF lost to CIT-U, 73-68, the University of San Carlos, 69-55, and got routed by UV, 106-53.
UC has something to prove this season: that despite a string of losses, it is still a team to be wary about because of its capability to win games, while USPF is hungrier than ever as it is looking to finally end its winless streak that dates back to last season.
And the Panthers will have to do that against a Webmasters team that has a deeper bench. Coach Roehl Gomez also has a taller frontline and better backcourt rotation than USPF.
Johnny Sigasig, Kenneth Niones, Ernesto Roche II, Pompeo Miranda and AJ Asis are parading the middle for UC, while Jan Auditor, Noel Villanueva, Kim Gomez have deadly hands. Edward Espiritu, Junas Misa, Anthony Tamparong and Carlos Tabaquero are the backcourt players who can also shoot and drive.
Coach Raul Latonio, meanwhile, will be relying on the prowess of Jomari Sollano and Art Camello and on the quickness and determination of rookies Carlo Sano, John Paul Batac, Michal Smith and Ervin Badrina.
USPF also has two underrated players who can turn things around—burly power forward Lawrence Escanilla and shooter Jenrey Nudalo, whose offensive burst could help the team win its first game.
