Time to get serious-A A +A

THE collegiate and high school teams will now start to get into serious matches as they battle for the rankings when the final stages of the elimination round of the 2013 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Basketball tournament starts this afternoon at the University of San Carlos Gym.
With only three more playing dates remaining to determine the classification round rankings, the University of San Jose-Recoletos, University of Cebu Webmasters, University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers and the University of San Carlos Warriors are going to try to score one more win in order to get the twice-to-beat edge over the bottom-ranked opponents in the quarterfinal round.
USJ-R and USC are holding a 2-2 win-loss cards; UC is 1-3; while USPF carries a 0-4 record.
In the high school division, USC Baby Warriors, UC Baby Webmasters and the USJ-R Baby Jaguars and the winless Don Bosco Technological Center Greywolves are all eyeing to score victories for the same reason.
The Baby Warriors (4-2) will play the Greywolves (0-6) at 1 p.m.; the Baby Webmasters (1-5) will play the Baby Jaguars (1-5) at 2:45 p.m.; USJ-R plays USPF at 4:30 p.m.; and USC will play UC in the main game at 6:45 p.m..
Coach Raul Latonio, who had given full authority on his assistant Michael Serenio to call the shots for the Panthers, is still hopeful that his players could score an upset over the Jaguars, who are in a good position to finish in third or fourth place.
He said that although they have an inferior line-up, the Panthers are capable of winning a game if they want to as they have enough ingredients to make it happen.
USPF has Jomari Sollano, a lanky center who has a decent perimeter shooting and is a skillful inside operator; the high leaping Art Camello who has the ability to score and defend in both transition and post plays; and rookie guards John Paul Batac, John Carlo Sano and Ervin Badrina, who are all quick and decent outside shooters.
But USJ-R is insurmountable as the Panthers need to beat rookie sensation Rendell Senining, James Regalado, Christian Parker, his bullstrong brother Matthew Parker, Miguel Tabaloc and Kyle Lajato in every position to beat the Jaguars.
In the main game, UC will need its guns working all the time. Its burly center Kenneth Niones has to stand his ground against USC’s Ahmed Salihou and Barry Amin.
UC’s Kim Gomez and Noel Villanueva will have to trade long bombs with Miguel Plata, Nico Magat and Stephen Que in order to be in a better position to get a victory.
