Battle for No. 3-A A +A
Monday, September 2, 2013
THE University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors and the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R Jaguars face each other in the final elimination round game of the 2013 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) college basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum at 7:30 tonight.
Likewise, the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons are in a must-win situation as they take on the unpredictable University of Cebu Webmasters in the high school game at 5:45, while the USJ-R Baby Jaguars face the Don Bosco Technological Center Greywolves at 4 p.m.
USC and USJ-R both have 3-2 win-loss records and their battle tonight will settle who will finish as the third-ranked team in the seven-team tournament. The quarterfinal round will start on Sept. 4.
The third-seeded team will play the sixth-seeded UC Webmasters (1-5), while the losing team tonight will play fifth-seed Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U), which has a 2-4 record.
The Warriors, however, will be playing minus two of their players, Dominic Adlawan and Charles Pepito, who are serving a one-game suspension for their involvement in a fight against UC last Saturday.
However, coach Edito Salacot also has his own dilemma and needs his players – especially team captain James Regalado and star rookie Rendell Senining – to step up.
Regalado and Senining averaged 14.0 and 14.6 points, respectively, in their first three games but were limited to just two points each against the defending champions Southwestern University Cobras.
Last Saturday, Regalado had eight and Senining only had four against the USPF Panthers, keeping the fiery mentor on his toes on how to get their offense going.
On defense, the Jaguars need to intensify their inside presence against the high-leaping Ahmed Salihou and the towering Barry Amin and they also have to be wary of the outside shooting of Miguel Plata, Nico Magat, Stephen Que, Ian Ortega and Victor Rabat.
