Cebu finishes 4th in Batang Pinoy beach volley-A A +A

THE Cebu City boys and girls beach volleyball squads settled for fourth place in the beach volleyball competitions of the Batang Pinoy, which wrapped up yesterday in Tagum City's Beach Volleydrome Court.
Cebu was represented by Abellana National School's Alex Mercader and Axel Abatayo in the boys team, while the duo of Sheila Mae Kiseo and Chinnie Pia Arroyo from University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) represented Cebu in the girls team.
This is the first time in a multi-event tournament that a beach volleyball competition is included.
Beach volleyball was held ahead of the schedule of the Batang Pinoy national competitions, which start later this month.
Cebu City will finalize its list of participants this week.
The beach volleyball competition was dominated by Davao del Norte both in the girls and boys divisions.
“One of the factors that led to our defeat was the lack of training in the sand court.
We didn’t have ample time to train on the sand before leaving for the tournament. So most of the trainings were done on the hard court,” said ANS head coach Karem Datig.
The silver medals were won by the Davao Del Norte A team.
The bronze in the boys division went to ARMM, while Iligan took third place in the girls side.
Having finished fourth could be disappointing for a city that wants to become the main hub of beach volleyball in the country.
But Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) beach volleyball consultant Eric Lecain said it was a decent finish since Cebu has not jumpstarted its grassroots development program yet.
“Those teams from Cebu were really troopers. They played against much bigger kids,” said Lecain.
Lecain is also in Tagum to help run the first beach volleyball competition in Batang Pinoy.
Lecain said it was still an impressive finish since 20 teams have signed up for the tournament.
Lecain is the prime mover in putting up a beach court in Cebu and bringing the national team here.
Lecain said that after the Batang Pinoy, he will be aggressive in conducting clinics for elementary and secondary coaches to introduce the game to them.
