NONITO Donaire Jr. takes on a familiar face in his featherweight debut as he is slated to fight Vic Darchinyan in a rematch on Nov. 9 in Texas.
Donaire Jr. is in a triple header along with world title fights between Vanes Martirosyan and Demetrius Andrade; and Mikey Garcia and Roman Martinez.
"The boys tell me that Vic Darchinyan against Donaire is done, but that the contracts are still en route. Vanes and Andrade is done, and Martinez and Garcia is being finalized," Top Rank head Bob Arum said in a report posted at The Ring Magazine.
Donaire Jr. and Darchinyan locked horns six years ago. Darchinyan was one of the best in the flyweight division and held the International Boxing Federation and International Boxing Organization titles, while Donaire Jr. was an up-and-comer trying to make a name for himself in the business.
Donaire Jr. shocked the world and stopped then unbeaten Darchinyan in the fifth round. Darchinyan was 28-0 at that time, while Donaire Jr. was 17-1.
The 30-year-old Donaire Jr., last year’s “Fighter of the Year”, suffered a unanimous decision defeat to Guillermo Rigondeaux, ending an impressive career run of 28 wins.
It was Donaire’s banner year last year, when he won all of his four fights. He opened up his campaign in 2012 with a split decision victory over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.; followed by a unanimous decision over Jeffey Mathebula before scoring knockouts over Toshiaki Nishioka and Jorge Arce.
The 37-year-old Darchinyan has won back-to-back fights against Luis del Valle and Javier Gallo.
Donaire Jr. is 31-2 with 20 knockouts, while Darchinyan is 39-5-1 with 28 knockouts.
