SWU Cobras bag semis spot-A A +A
Monday, September 2, 2013
DEFENDING champions Southwestern University Cobras (SWU) completed a six-game sweep to take the first semifinal slot after an emphatic 88-65 win over the University of Southern Philippine Foundation Panthers (USPF) in the 2013 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum yesterday.
However, it was the unexpected victory of the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats over the University of Cebu Webmasters that took the limelight away from the defending champions.
The Wildcats again turned to super rookie Joshua de la Cerna for the needed spark to wipe away the two-time champions in an unexpected 27-point rout, 88-61, in the main game.
De la Cerna scored the game-high 28 points, 13 in the pivotal third quarter, when the Wildcats started to pull away. He also had nine rebounds.
In the high school matches, defending champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles finished their elimination round unscathed after an 80-75 win over the USPF Baby Panthers. Jair Igna scored 18 and Arnie Padilla had 17.
The USC Baby Warriors also finished the classification round with a 73-70 win over the CIT-U Wildkittens.
The Wildcats meanwhile had the game under control despite having team skipper Floyd Taboada riding the bench early. The usual high scoring mode of De la Cerna and the break out game of Vincent Minguito helped CIT-U take early control.
UC, however, was able to give the Wildcats a good fight for the entire first half.
However, UC lost steam when CIT-U started to make successful defensive stops and scored more points on fastbreaks.
An 11-2 run at the start of the third period was all it took for the Wildcats to build a double digit lead for good. After de la Cerna punished the defense of UC, it was Taboda’s time to take over the scoring cudgels in the final period, while burly forward John Graf provided the outside shots that kept the Webmasters’ guessing on defense.
