THE Southwestern University (SWU) Lady Cobras eye reclaiming their dominance in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. volleyball tournament and they seem to be on the right track as they beat reigning champions University of San Carlos (USC) Lady Warriors in three sets, 25-8, 25-21, 26-24, the other day at the Aznar Coliseum.
While the USC women’s team is struggling, its men’s team continues to lead the competition as it defeated the SWU men’s team, 22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 29-27.
In the women’s match, SWU keeps its composure despite losing two of its key players—Danika Gendrauli and Raphril Aguilar—who are now playing professionally for team Cignal in the Super Liga Philippine volleyball tournament in Manila. According to SWU head coach Jordan Paca, they gained five key players in place of Aguilar and Gendrauli.
Three of them, Sheila Bongo, Therese Ramas and Sheena Quino, came from their SWU secondary team, while Janelle Cabahug and Diane Darantinaw come from Don Gerardo National High School.
“Even though nawala among two key players, si Gendrauli og Aguilar, still we were able to recruit five solid players. We hope they can be instrumental as we eye reclaiming our dominance in women's volleyball,” said Paca.
SWU won a grand slam before USC barred them last year from claiming their fourth title.
This year's tournament is using a new game format, which is home and away.
“This year we will be using a single round robin in the elimination and another single round robin in the semifinals, and a best-of-three in the finals with the top two teams vying for the championship,” said the newly-appointed tournament manager Ryan Aznar.
In the other women’s division games, University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) bowed to University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR), 19-25, 20-25, 18-25.
