THE Philippine Basketball Association on Friday meted San Mig Coffee's Marc Pingris and Globalport's Kelly Nabong a fine of P60,000 each and two-game suspensions in the ongoing PBA Governor's Cup elimination round.
Both Pingris, a member of Gilas Pilipinas, and the rookie Nabong were trading blows in their game last Wednesday that led to a free-for-all. The Coffee Mixers won the game, 102-88.
“Fighting will not be condoned by the league. There is absolutely no justification for our players to get involved in fistfights,” Commissioner Chito Salud said.
Aside from the two players, Salud also suspended San Mig Coffee forward Joe Devance for one game and imposed a fine of P30,000 for unsportsnamlike conduct that triggered the commotion. Marvin Hayes was also fined P20,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct.
"With this, it should be clear to everyone that instigators, hotheads and troublemakers have no place in the PBA and will be dealt with severely. Instigators also deserve special mention, especially those not even directly involved in the immediate action,” said Salud.
