UNIVERSITY of San Carlos’ (USC) aggressive and pesky defense helped them hold on to an early lead for a close 1-0 win over University of Cebu (UC) in an exciting and physical match yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Complex football pitch.
USC midfielder Karl Arcenas hit a perfect free kick from just outside the box in the 14th minute for the early lead.
USC kept their fast offensives and pressed on the action most of the first half, but the scoreline remained the same.
UC started to gain momentum and was on attack mode in the second half. USC made two crucial fouls just outside the box late in the second half, but UC failed to convert in both opportunities.
UC also had a couple of corner kicks but they weren’t able to capitalize on it.
Defending tertiary champions University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) made an impression in their opening match of the season with a lopsided 6-0 beating over newcomers Don Bosco College (DBC).
