Mendoza: Mayweather in another escape act?-A A +A

SUNDAY shocker? Sunday Sleeper? Sunday Steal?
It could be all of the above.
I mean, once Saul “Canelo”
Alvarez beats Floyd Mayweather Jr. Sunday, surely, that will shock us all.
If the fight should be a bore, blame it on the hit-and-run Mayweather.
And if Alvarez steals the fight with a punch sneaked in from nowhere, then Mayweather, at 36, has finally grown old.
Alvarez is the underdog but he has tools to put down a guy because he packs a big punch on both fists.
But the question is, can Canelo deliver the goods?
I have very, very strong doubts.
Yes, he is 23 years old but the 36-year-old legs of Mayweather still dance and move around like a 25-year-old’s.
Like Mayweather, Alvarez is also unbeaten with his 42-0 record, with 30 KOs as against Mayweather’s 26 KOs.
It’s all very fine. Alvarez is just two fights shy of Mayweather’s record of 44 bouts—all won.
But Mayweather is made of different stuff.
While other 36-year-olds have retired, not Mayweather. In his last fight last May against Robert Guerrero, Mayweather never showed signs of aging in pocketing a 12-round majority decision.
He will win again—and, most likely, on points anew.
That has always been Mayweather—contenting himself with piling up wins spiced with so much dancing and less in punching.
The last time he scored a knockout was three fights back, but not after Victor Ortiz lowered his hands while trying to clarify something with the referee.
Like a hungry lion, Mayweather pounced on his unwary, careless prey and knocked out Ortiz with a combination.
That was only his 26th KO win. But, despite that not-so-prestigious knockout ratio, Mayweather packs a potent punch that is hard to deflect and telegraph because of his amazing speed.
Why he was still so lightning fast, cat quick, and snappy and alert like a Doberman last May against Guerrero was not hard to fathom: Because speed was his main weapon the last 15 years, he has preserved a body and a face that had been practically untouched by leather.
For Alvarez to steal the fight, he must use guided missile a.k.a. error-free hand combat. In short, trapping the runner is his only chance.
