MANILA—The Philippine national volleyball team fought hard in four sets before losing, 25-19, 20-25, 18-25, 15-25, to Iran in the second day of the 17th Asian Seniors
Women’s Volleyball Championship in Thailand.
Iran, which lost to China in three sets during the opening, bounced back strong in the second after a 19-25 thriller in the opening set.
With the setback, their second straight in the tournament following also a three-set loss to India on Friday, the Power Pinays lost their hope of making the quarterfinal phase. They will be now relegated to the classification phase of the biennial tournament.
The Filipina spikers end their preliminary round schedule with a showdown against 12-time winner and defending champion China.
Compounding the woes of the Power Pinays was the sprained ankle suffered by team captain Angeli Tabaquero in the second set.
“Mali ang bagsak. Na-sprain,” said the 29-year-old communication arts graduate of University of Santo Tomas of her injury.
Tabaquero, who led the team with 13 points, all from spikes, valiantly returned in the third set to the cheers of the Filipino community that supported the Power Pinays. The Iranians, though, were unfazed and never allowed the Filipinas to get back in the game, which they won in one hour and 49 minutes.
Honey Rose Tubino and Aiza Mazo added 12 and 11, in a losing cause for the Power Pinays.
