IT’S not every day that a budding boxer gets to join the training camp of a world boxing icon.

Unbeaten amateur standout Jack Tepora earns a once in a lifetime opportunity as he
joins Manny Pacquiao’s training in General Santos.

“We are in General Santos. training with Manny,” Omega Boxing Gym head trainer and Jack’s older brother Christopher “Ping-Ping” Tepora told Sun.Star Cebu.

Jack and Christopher joined Pacquiao’s training camp for his upcoming bout against dangerous slugger Brandon Rios on Nov. 23 in Macau.

Christopher believes that training with Pacquiao, an eight division world champion, would have a huge impact on his younger sibling, who is still building up a career in the pro ranks.

“Training with Manny would be good for him because he will learn a lot from him. He will also see how a world champion trains because that is his ambition,” he said.

The reason that Jack is training with Pacquiao is that the Filipino boxing superstar’s MP Promotions has shown interest in the former gold medalist.

“Yes, we were invited here because they are interested to look at Jack’s style. He will be given a fight on Oct. 26 in Manila under MP Promotions,” said Christopher, a former boxer himself.

According to Christopher, one of Pacquiao’s trainers, Nonoy Neri, was the one that saw Jack’s potential and referred the 18-year-old prospect to Pacquiao.

Neri was in Cebu City last year to train former world champion Rodel Mayol for a fight in Mexico, in which Jack was one of his sparring partners at the Omega Boxing Gym.

Jack has been impressive in his career so far, and he holds an unblemished 7-0 record with five knockouts.

Jack fought in a big event last month as one of the undercards of the world title bout between Tomoki Kameda and Paulus Ambunda at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu City. He easily demolished Randy Gomez in the opening round.

“They didn’t mention a contract. Maybe they will look at Jack first in his fight on Oct. 26,” said Christopher.

Even if Jack doesn’t earn a contract with MP Promotions, the knowledge that he will learn with one of the best boxers in the world should be enough to jumpstart his promising career.
