MANILA—The Meralco Bolts ended Barako Bull’s hope as it carved an 86-68 rout to become the first team to clinch a semifinal slot in the 2013 PBA Governors Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Mario West and Reynel Hugnatan broke the defense of the Energy Cola in the second quarter to post a 19-point lead, 44-25, en route to their second straight semifinal appearance. They also made it to the semis in the same conference last year.
“In as much as I would like to really think of ways to describe our run, much of it is attributed to the coaching genius of coach Jong Uichico, who prepared us defensively. We just wanted to weather the storm. It was really our defense that made our game a lot easier. Our defense held up tremendously tonight. I hope in the next game Mike Cortez is ready to play,” said Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio.
They will face the winner between no. 2 seed San Mig Coffee and no. 7 Alaska Aces in the best-of-five semifinal round. Both the Coffee Mixers and the Aces were still playing at press time.
West topscored for Meralco with 25 points, Hugnatan finished with 18, and Mac Cardona settled for 12.
