THE University of San Carlos (USC) and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) own the bragging rights going into their respective championship matches this coming weekend in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. football tournament after beating their rivals yesterday.
USC routed defending tertiary division champion University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), 2-0, in a heated match, while SHS-AdC, the reigning secondary division titleholder, edged out Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC), 1-0, on the Cebu City Sports Center football pitch.
After a scoreless draw in their other meeting this season, league leader USC made sure that the momentum will be on their side going into the championship game this weekend.
John Jarnaiz drew first blood after hitting his target in the 15th minute. His goal was initially called an offside by the linesman but after a talk with the referee it was later declared a goal.
Harvey Tumlad added another goal in the 70th minute.
The match turned ugly when USJ-R goalkeeper Joel Cahilog was slapped with a red card late in the game after punching USC winger Yves Caballero.
Cahilog will be suspended in the last elimination game between USJ-R and Don Bosco College (DBC).
According to tournament manager Francis Ramirez they will be evaluating the untoward incident in the match, if ever Cahilog will be slapped with additional sanctions.
“We will be deliberating it if we will be giving him an additional game suspension. We will let it calm down first,” Ramirez told Sun.Star Cebu. “If we decide to give him an additional game suspension, we will recommend it to the commissioner and the commissioner will be the one to decide if he will give the additional game suspension.”
Ramirez will deliberate on the incident along with the referees of the match and the accessor.
In the meantime, Berthram Musni scored the lone goal for SHS-AdC in the 44th minute of regulation.
SHS-AdC and DBTC face off this Saturday at 2:30 in the afternoon.
In the other tertiary division matches, University of Cebu (UC) settled to a scoreless draw with University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF); while University of the Visayas (UV) thrashed DBC, 5-0.
UC and USPF are the teams that will vie for third place this Sunday.
