Mendoza: Teng vs. Teng makes Pa torn between two-A A +A

REMEMBER the film, Kramer versus Kramer? It starred Dustin Hoffman, and the movie’s theme was a court battle between Mr. Kramer and Mrs. Kramer over, if memory serves, custody of their child.
Anyway, that film had all the drama required of a Hollywood script that it became, needless to say, a blockbuster.
Now comes the UAAP’s (University Athletic Association of the Philippines) version of Kramer versus Kramer. Its title is Teng versus Teng.
No, it is not a husband versus wife case; far from that.
Rather, it is brother versus brother.
Jeric Teng is the older brother of Jeron Teng. Jeric plays for University of Sto.
Tomas and Jeron, La Salle.
And take this: both brothers are stars in their teams.
Minutes after La Salle had ousted Far Eastern U to clinch a coveted championship slot, Jeron told his Kuya Jeric: “I will wait for you in the Finals, Kuya.”
Jeric was quoted by Abante sportswriter Mark Escarlote as telling his younger brother, “Mission accomplished, utol.”
To accomplish his mission, Jeric had to literally give it his all in the winner-take-it-all match, banging home a game-high 19 points in UST’s impressive 76-69 victory that thoroughly shocked the top-seeded NU.
So emotional was UST coach Pido Jarencio that he cried unabashedly with still seconds remaining in the game.
“Many had doubted about my abilities to bring my team to the Finals,” said Jarencio, who also broke down during the press conference and hurriedly left the room in the middle of a sentence.
This is the second straight year that Pido had piloted the Growling Tigers to the Finals, with UST losing to Ateneo last year as the Blue Eagles won their fifth straight crown.
When La Salle and UST begin their best-of-three title playoffs Wednesday, the Teng brothers will rewrite league history as they become the first siblings clashing for the crown from different schools.
Alvin Teng, the former PBA star himself as a power rebounder of San Miguel Beer, will be more than an interested spectator from ringside.
As the kids’ father, Alvin will also be torn “between two lovers.”
