THE University of San Carlos (USC) beat defending champion University of the Visayas (UV), 57-47, to capture the Passerelle division title of the Cebu leg of the Milo Best SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament, avenging its loss in last year’s finals.
Both squads were competitive and kept it close in the opening period, with USC up by only two, 14-12. John Galinato stepped up in the second quarter and opened a 12-0 run as USC got ahead, 36-20, at halftime.
USC and UV traded baskets in the third and the Baby Warriors still had a decent 43-28 lead going into the final quarter.
UV, led by Joshua Flores and Orlan Wamar, crawled back up and narrowed the lead to just five, 49-44, with 4:45 left in regulation. However, USC kept its composure and fired back with an 8-2 run for a 57-46 lead with 31 seconds left.
Galinato, who orchestrated USC’s last run, was the top man with 15 points, while Wamar led UV with 13 points.
USC will represent Cebu in the Visayas regional finals in Iloilo City on Oct. 12 and 13 against Bacolod titleholder University of St. La Salle, Iloilo champion Ateneo de Iloilo and the winner of the tournament in Roxas City.
Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu won third place honors following a dominant 76-41 victory over Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC).
